Drogheda was once the home to a famous Jameson whiskey distillery that operated here for 150 years. Irish whiskey legend John Jameson, the founder of Jameson Whiskey also owned a luxurious family home in the centre of Drogheda, that he kept up until his death in 1851. Sarsfields, a quaint bar on the chord road was owned by Mrs James Jameson. Many famous stories about her are often told. In 1851, a frosty council official called to the pub and asked the staff the name of the pub’s owner, the full name. He was told ‘It’s Mrs Jameson’. The staff only revealed the surname but not her first name because they would never actually use her first name. The official insisted on knowing the owner’s first name for council records, the reply was the same, ‘Madam’s first name is never used here so it’s simply Mrs Jameson to you’. The official would not give up and refused to leave unless they gave him the owner’s first name. Eventually the staff came back and said ‘Ok, her first name is ‘The’. So you can write down ‘The Mrs Jameson’…. And so he did and that is how it was officially recorded. The Misses Jameson. There was a spirit store on the corner of Constitution Hill and Bachelors Lane, which was used by Jameson Whiskey in 1850. The barrels could be rolled down to the boats from here, and occasionally the odd one would slip up to Mrs. Jameson’s. There’s nothing like a traditional Irish pub and here at Sarsfields little has changed since the Jameson’s owned the bar in 1800s. Join us for a warm welcome and a pint of plain or a glass of Irish Whiskey .You’re in good company .There is still a seat reserved for the boss “Mr. Jameson”, the greatest Whiskey maker of all time and proud owner of Sarsfields bar.
